On 14 and 15 May 2024, the Government of the Netherlands will organize a conference in cooperation with UNESCO on ‘Building on 70 Years of the UNESCO Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict’. The conference at the World Forum in The Hague brings together experts from around the world to discuss the benefits, challenges and lessons learned since the treaty came into force.
Context
Destruction of heritage is of all times and occurs worldwide. Following the devastation of the two World Wars, several states agreed in UNESCO's Hague Convention that heritage should be respected and protected during armed conflict. In 1999, this was confirmed by the drafting of the Second Protocol. Recent conflicts demonstrate the importance and relevance of these international agreements more than once.
